Sin Ma Xiao Yu Looeg Stage Show

Opera and puppetry troupe

About the troupe

Founded in 2016 by Khneoh Soon Huat (known as Ah Huat), Sin Ma Xiao Yu Looeg Stage Show grew from his passion for traditional Hokkien opera and his concern over the gradual decline of the art form. A former hawker who grew up in the world of opera troupes, Ah Huat later collaborated with Singapore’s Xiao Yu Long Opera Troupe to promote and sustain this tradition in Malaysia. The troupe brings together veteran Hokkien opera performers, many with decades of experience. Their repertoire encompasses historical narratives, martial arts and heroic tales, folk stories, and accounts based on real events. Performances range from full-scale Hokkien opera and simplified forms of the genre to glove puppetry and vocal performance. The troupe is also recognised for its striking visual presentation. Ah Huat pays particular attention to costumes and accessories, with many pieces imported from Taiwan. Their vivid colours and distinctive designs have become an important feature of the troupe’s stage performances. Active across Malaysia, Sin Ma Xiao Yu Looeg is regularly invited to perform at deity birthday celebrations, thanksgiving ceremonies, and other temple events. Drawing on the knowledge, skills, and experience of its veteran performers, the troupe is committed to keeping Hokkien opera alive and ensuring that its artistic traditions and cultural heritage are passed on to future generations.
